Mwea rice farmers to be compensated

The government have agreed finally to compensate the rice farmers in mwea in kirinyaga county.

  • National Irrigation Board social economist Alexander Masika said the government has set aside 350 acres for resettlement of the 252 households that have chosen compensation in kind.
  • The construction of Thiba Dam is scheduled to start next June and be completed in 2017. The project will enhance water supply in Mutithi location of Mwea Division and rice cultivation.
  • Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jika) and the government are funding the project which is expected to cost Sh20 billion.
